I care that we have toxins in the environment. They are everywhere in our earth, in our air and water. In the youTube clip, "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" in 5 years we have much more plastic in our oceans. It is frighting. We have toxic problems in other states as well as California. I think we should clean up the mining waste in our community. But who will pay for it? And more importantly, where will we put the waste? I think this is an important question. We can't burn it because then it will float into our air and we can't bury it because then it will get into our soil. The same problem with the baseball field that was on top of a tailing's pile and all the asbestos in on the hazard suits would happen again. It might even be a more toxic substance that doesn't take years to kill you but days. We also need to make sure it doesn't harm any other species.
If we didn't have so much garbage maybe it can cut down on adding more toxins to our environment. I think we all have a personal responsibility to take care of the choices we make as we live our lives. The amount of water we use, the types of containers we choose to story food in, cook with and drink from are all choices that we make. We also have a personal responsibility to be informed and stay informed about our environment. But I also feel that the government has a responsibility of providing us with acquate information about our environmental issues that we might not know are happening. It would help for them to be open and honest about the short term and long term effects that can happen if we choose not to care.

I agree with what you have to say. where do the toxins go? we cant burn them or bury them..and they dont just disolve. it doesnt make much sense to me..and i was very unware of how many toxins we have surrounding us in our enviroment. THe abestos thing that Mike talked about was also new information that i wasnt quite aware of. I think alot of the toxins have to do with litering also, if people would just wait to get to a trashcan that would eliminate the toxins that are in the air. great blog.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Pacific Garbage patch is scary. If you want to see a big garbage patch thats a little closer, go to Texas. And if you want to see lots of plastic, head to the coast, near Corpus Christi. While I was scouting for a wildlife photographer down in that area (shameless plug), I had time to visit this legendary birding coast. I was shocked to see the mass amounts of plastics that were on the shore from all over the world. Lot's of spanish and some other languages I didn't understand. I couldn't believe people used this area as a recreation site, I would've been appalled.
ReplyDeleteI too believe it is a personal responsibility that everyone must fulfill. The biggest problem with this right now though, is the money crisis. At least my parents won't buy things that are in better containers, or packaged less, unless they are cheaper than those that they have always bought. I wish that the government would keep us updated and informed on what is going on, but it seems as if all that really makes the news nowadays are peoples personal issues and/or disasters around the world, always with a little hint of the money crisis. For now what we can do is take it upon ourselves to better the world and influence those who don't believe that it is an issue.
ReplyDeleteWe do need to clean up the environment but it will take a lot of debating on who should do it. Personally, the government should because it is their responsibility to make sure that the public is safe.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to know a lot about the harmful things found in our environment. I think that if everyone had this kind of knowledge, let alone cared, not only CA would be moved and affected to do something. Awareness is key, to any beginning. It will be a mess in terms of funds.
